UPDATE 2: Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke confirmed three law enforcement officers were shot, including a DPS Trooper, a Midland Police Department officer and an Odessa Police Department officer.
UPDATE: Police believe the lone gunman responsible for the shootings is dead.
August 31, 2019 Law enforcement officials say at least five people were killed and up to 21 others were injured in a series of shootings in Odessa, Texas, on Saturday.
The Midland Police Department said one suspect was shot and killed near the Cinergy Movie Theater in Odessa, Texas. There is no active shooter at this time. The shooter, according to police was a white male in his 30’s.
The Associated Press reported that Midland Police said one gunman was believed to be driving a gold–colored vehicle and has a rifle.
Police in Odessa, Texas, say a shooter was believed to be driving a U.S. Postal Service vehicle. The gunman hijacked the postal vehicle and then fired at random, hitting multiple people.
Odessa spokesman, Devin Sanchez said there are 10 confirmed injuries with possibly up to 20 injured. There is one person confirmed dead, he said. One of those who was shot is a law enforcement officer, but it is unclear if the officer is injured or dead. Sanchez said someone in a gold Toyota was driving around shopping centers and shooting people from his vehicle. The area is near 32nd and 191, on the east side of Odessa.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said that an officer was among those shot and urged the public to avoid Interstate 20 in Odessa, Midland and Big Spring. Residents of Midland and Odessa were also urged to stay inside.
