UPDATE 2: The death toll in Friday’s mass shooting at a #VirginiaBeach Municipal Building now stands at twelve.

UPDATE: 11 people killed in Virginia Beach Municipal Building Shooting. The lone shooter, a city employee is also dead.

May 31, 2019  Several people were wounded in a shooting at a municipal building in Virginia Beach late Friday afternoon. A shooter is in police custody. There are early unconfirmed reports of several fatalities.

The shooting incident took place at Building 2 in the 2400 block of Courthouse Drive. The school administration building near City Hall went on lockdown at 4:24 p.m., a school system spokeswoman said.

The Virginia Police Department via Twitter:

“ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATION-municipal center, building 2. Multiple injuries. At this time it is believed that only 1 shooter, and they have been taken into custody. More to follow”

CNN reports that an FBI spokesperson confirmed that FBI agents are also responding to the incident to provide assistance to local authorities.

A press conference is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. EST.

Virginia Beach authorities have not released a motive for Friday’s shooting.

Federal, state and local municipals have increased security measures at government buildings in recent years.  In 2015, an Islamic State or ISIS propaganda video posted online warned that attacks are imminent on Western targets including in Washington, D.C.. A member of the terrorist group is heard and seen on the video saying:

“we swear that we will strike America at its center in Washington.”

A U.S. Department of Homeland Security  video titled “Run, Fight, Hide” is part of an effort to enhance preparedness through a “whole community” approach by providing  Americans with resources to help prepare for and respond to an active shooter incident.
