More Explosives Targeting Democrats Found, Police Believe All are Connected

October 24, 2018 The U.S. Secret Service confirmed on Wednesday morning that packages containing “potential explosive devices” addressed to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton in New York and former president Barack Obama in Washington were intercepted before anyone was harmed. Since then more suspicious packages have turned up at CNN’s headquarters in New York City and former CIA chief John Brennan and Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

The Los Angeles Times reports that law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation said authorities suspect at least two of the devices — and possibly all — were made and sent by the same person or persons. The officials described an aggressive “full court press” to identify and capture the suspects.

New York City’s Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill said during news conference that a package sent to CNN’s offices in New York contained what appeared to be a live explosive and an envelope containing white powder. The Time Warner Building in New York City was evacuated on Wednesday morning after a suspicious package was found in the CNN mail room, according to New York police. CNN has a bureau in the building. FBI Special Agent in Charge C. Bryan Paarmann said that “so far the devices have been what appear to be pipe bombs.”

Potentially explosive devices have been mailed to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, liberal billionaire George Soros, former CIA director John Brennan and Former Attorney General Eric Holder over the past few days. Police in Sunrise, Florida are responding to a report of a suspicious package at the office of U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. One of the packages intercepted by the Secret Service this morning had the return address of Democratic Rep. Deborah Wasserman Schultz.

John Brennan served as the CIA’s daily intelligence briefer at the White House during the administration of US President Bill Clinton.

Soros was not home at the time. Due to his support for a number of liberal causes, Soros has recently been the target of right wing conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic attack. Laura Silber, a spokeswoman for Soros’ Open Society Foundations, blamed the country’s toxic political environment.

“The hateful rhetoric that dominates politics in the U.S. and in so many countries around the world breeds extremism and violence,” Silber said in a statement. “In this climate of fear, falsehoods and rising authoritarianism, just voicing your views can draw death threats.”
